Presented as part of the Wild Hope exhibition, in Melbourne’s Now or Never Festival

In 2019, the City of Melbourne declared a climate and biodiversity emergency joining over 2,300 jurisdictions across 40 countries. The global initiative aims to mobilise society-wide resources to protect human and non-human livelihood and existence. While the value of vegetation has widely been understood, the emergency calls for a radical shift in how we design our cities. Green is not automatically good.

This panel discussion is set around the re/Wild/ing Melbourne project investigating the reintroduction of complex ecosystems into the City of Melbourne. Bringing together designers, human geographers, and the City of Melbourne, this session explores key questions facing the design disciplines, as they engage with future-proofing our city.

What is wild? How can we introduce not just green but complex ecologies into the City of Melbourne? How can we generate engaging environments that create new awareness and experiences? How do we address existing fears from dark spaces, thickets, unexpected animal life?

Join us, to explore the challenges and opportunities we face to make a wide application of diverse ecosystems a reality.
