Jock Gilbert is a registered landscape whose teaching and research focus on the design and development of sustainable public and private infrastructure using community engagement, regenerative practice, and Indigenous-led design methods. Studio teaching that delivers tangible outcomes is integral to the furthering of his design research, which focuses on four key areas:

• The development of Indigenous-led design capacity in design practices and academia

• The design and development of community infrastructure through partnerships across design disciplines, practices, and academia

• The development of design curriculum reflecting Indigenous perspectives

• Investigation of the botanic garden’s potential to reflect place more deeply

Jock collaborated with Dr Christine Phillips, Beau de Belle, Sophia Pearce, and N’Arwee’t Professor Carolyn Briggs AM to establish the Yulendj Weelam design research laboratory as a vehicle to further these projects. He also leads the School of Architecture and Urban Design Ngulu Committee, which focus on the implementation of Reconciliation activities.

Jock’s recent research has involved collaborations with the Culpra Milli Aboriginal Corporation, Kulpa Mardita, McGregor Coxall Landscape Architects, Clarke Hopkins Clarke Architects, Ballarat Botanic Garden, Buninyong Botanic Garden, Australian Inland Botanic Garden, Royal Botanic Garden of Victoria, Greening the West, Heart Gardening Project and Melbourne Pollinator Corridor, the Birrarung Council, NSW Local Land Services, and Landcare Australia.
